Zero Waste Orange Kiwi Sorbet

We all know that eating fruit is one of the best things we can do for our overall health. But we also know that eating fruit can come with some challenges. From getting fruit-eating burnout to over-purchasing produce and not enjoying them before they go bad, getting in the right amount of fruit in our diets isn’t a task that is as cut-and-dry as we sometimes wish.

Want to know my secret weapon that helps my family and I eat more fruit while minimizing food waste?

It’s a machine that I originally got my hands on to make decadent homemade ice cream, but soon learned that leaning on it to recycle leftover produce is totally easy-breezy.

Give up? It’s the Ninja CREAMi ™, an incredible machine that can make almost anything into ice cream, sorbet, a milkshake, or a smoothie bowl (#gifted in partnership with Ninja). With under 10 minutes of hands-on time, I can create a slew of good-for-you recipes that minimize food waste simply by whipping up a frozen treat in my own kitchen.

This Earth Day, I created a sorbet using ingredients that were on the brink of going bad --- overripe kiwi that was too soft to slice and oranges that were not suitable for adding to my fruit salad thanks to the extended time they spent on my kitchen counter.

With only three ingredients that I already had on-hand (and honestly was close to throwing out), I made a fiber-fueled and totally delish sorbet that my entire family enjoyed (even my picky six year old asked for seconds).

It’s super-simple to re-create using the following recipe:

 INGREDIENTS

  • 4 medium-sized oranges, sliced horizontally

  • 2 very ripe kiwis, skin on and washed well

  • 1 ½ tablespoon locally sourced raw honey

  • 1 tablespoon orange zest, optional

METHOD

·       STEP 1

Juice the oranges using the Ninja® Cold Press Juicer Pro. You should have approximately 1 cup of juice. Reserve the rind.

·       STEP 2

Add the orange juice (approx. 1 cup, but this may vary on the size of your oranges), kiwis (with skin on), and honey in a high-powered blender and blend until smooth.

·       STEP 3

Pour base into an empty CREAMi™ Pint. Place storage lid on pint and freeze for 24 hours.

·       STEP 4

Remove pint from freezer and remove lid from pint. Place pint in outer bowl, install Creamerizer™ Paddle in outer bowl lid, and lock the lid assembly onto the outer bowl. Place bowl assembly on motor base and twist the handle right to raise the platform and lock in place.

·       STEP 5

Select SORBET.

·       STEP 6

When processing is complete, remove sorbet from pint and serve immediately. Top with orange zest if desired.

Optional: Serve sorbet in leftover orange rind “bowls” for a zero-waste treat.

What I love most about the Ninja™ CREAMi® is that it gives you complete control of ingredients, so you can get creative with what’s in your fridge! For even more recipe inspiration, Ninja offers a handful of fun recipes on NinjaCreami.com/Allidays
